Summary
The Supreme Court held that the machine-or-transformation test is not the exclusive test for determining whether a process is patent-eligible under 35 U.S.C. § 101. The Court also rejected a categorical exclusion of business methods from patent eligibility. It nevertheless affirmed the judgment because the petitioners’ claims were directed to the unpatentable abstract idea of hedging risk.
